Colorado’s Last Great Ski Town
The History
Long before maps marked this mountain valley, the Ute people returned each summer to hunt beneath Crested Butte’s towering peaks. Miners followed in the 1860s, carving out a booming coal town that later transformed with the opening of the ski area in 1962–63. Adventure has always shaped this place—home to more than 700 miles of singletrack and the world’s first mountain bike club, founded here in 1983. Today, Crested Butte remains a vibrant blend of history and wild beauty: the wildflower capital of Colorado, one of the nation’s best-preserved mining towns, and a National Historic District where brightly painted homes line Elk Avenue. Visitors come to ski, bike, hike, float, and immerse themselves in a mountain paradise that inspires the soul.
